When you grow up with someone, you take them for granted. They are a part of your life, and their part in your life is filled with joys and sorrows as kids tend to go from angelic to mischievous depending on the weather.

My cousin Dany would have been 43 on July 12th.

I spent most of my waking hours with Dany and his older brother Christian exploring, pretending and running from each other. Chris and I used to run away from Dany most of the time, since older kids tend to be cruel to the youngest.

Then we grew up and went our separate ways. I moved from Pennsylvania to Florida, Chris moved to California and Dany moved to Cancun, Mexico. The distance did not help us keep in touch with each other, and I having been a loner most of my life, I was not one for initiating conversations, writing letters, etc.

I did hear more from Chris than I did from Dany, and one day, February 1, 2003, I heard from my parents that Dany had taken his own life after he had discovered that he had cancer of the larynx.

Shock was not the only thing I felt.

Guilt.

I should have been there for him. We all believe that we can make it on our own, and then when someone you know, someone close as a brother, takes their own life, you wonder what effect you could have had.

What impact could I have had?

Beating myself up for the lack of communication, I really sank into a depression. The worst part of the whole situation for me was the fact that I should have maintained contact with Dany.

Why am I dredging up these raw emotions and exposing them for you? Then answer is really only one word:

LISTEN.

Hear what your friends and family are saying. You may have some troubled teens in your family. Teens are at a point in their lives where they feel isolated. They want to feel independent, yet they also feel left out from their friends’ lives because of cruelty (kids are cruel after all - especially groups) or disagreements. The reason for their isolation does not matter nearly as much as the fact that it is eating away at their will to live.

Sometimes (I have had this feeling before in a particularly troubling time of isolation from my family and despair at my circumstances) they feel that their life is not worth living, the pain is too unbearable, and that by taking their own life, they would be getting revenge on the people who make them feel so isolated.

“That’ll show them!”

Listen to them.

Then GIVE!

  • G - Greet and meet: talk to others, smile, say hello, ask them how they are doing…
  • I - Involve yourself: find a cause you can support, volunteer, and pledge resources to
  • V - Validate others: tell others that they matter - especially family members and friends that you tend to see daily but may take for granted, give genuine compliments
  • E - Empathize: be a listening ear, take time to be fully present, don’t try to solve - just acknowledge someone’s feeling or hurt

By following this formula, you are showing teens that you care. Empathy is a catalyst for bonding, and can help you reel in the teen that has started to distance himself or herself from the world around them.

I cannot profess to be an expert, but the people at SpeakUpSaveLives.org like Deremiah Phillips have shown me what taking an extra minute with someone who may just need a smile can do for that person! The goal for our group is to save our teens one at a time. But I have selfishly added my own agenda to this project.

I am doing it because I still miss Dany Savoie!

Have an amazing day!

Micheal Savoie

Hey Folks,

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and according to the World Health Organization there are two deaths by suicide every 60 seconds.

Suicide is an epidemic that is especially prevalent among our young people so today we took our message of hope and action and presented it to millions of people live on Comcast’s CN8 “Your Morning” Show as I was interviewed by veteran newsman, Greg Coy.

http://speakupsavelives.org/images/KenOnSetAtCN8.jpg

Ever since the publication of my book, Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions and Make a Difference in a Noisy World, I’ve been doing radio shows to tell people that what they do — or DON’T do — makes an impact every day whether we want it to or not, but until today, I’d never done a television show.

Well, that is unless you count my appearance in the audience on the Howdy Doody Show as a very young child.

So what is it like to do your first television interview?

Well first of all, let me tell you that if I can do it then anyone can!

But …

It really helps to get some excellent help!

So step one if you want to get out and spread the “Speak Up Save Lives” message on television is to contact Sanyika Calloway Boyce who is the Impact Faculty Member in charge of using radio and television to spread your message.

If you are interested in appearing on television for the “Speak Up Save Lives” project or any other reason for that matter, be sure to click here to pick up Sanyika’s free “5 Myths of Getting Television Publicity Exposed!” teleseminar. You will discover how to levearge TV appearances into repeat media booking as you gain the credibility that you need right now to get your message out in a noisy world.

I can tell you that Sanyika’s prep work is OUTSTANDING and that it will make your live SO much easier as you cut through the hype and deliver real results.  Her media coaching is wonderful and helps to put you at ease even when you realize that MILLIONS of people may be watching you!

Even better, Sanyika is a tireless worker who KNOWS PEOPLE!

Sanyika personally worked the phones to get me on the air and not only that … she also managed to convince publicist Mark Goldman to work the phones and craft press releases for the Impact Action Team too!

The results … a major booking in front of millions of potential viewers.

Then she went to work to make me feel at ease and to be prepared and professional when I got there.

No half hearted commitment on Sanyika’s part!  She CONSTANTLY went the extra mile to work out details with the producer, suggest possible responses to the segment outline and tell me exactly what to bring and what to do when I got to the studio.

Here’s what I looked like 20 minutes before air time.

Note that I’m studying Sanyika’s carefully crafted materials like crazy!

http://speakupsavelives.org/images/KenPreparing400.gif

Even better, she hooked me up at the Impact Boot Camp with Producer and Videographer, Derek Brian Stevenson and then convince HIM to go the extra mile.

Derek is an amazing young man with a wonderful heart, who took time out from his own production company to meet me at the set of CN8 and put me at ease. One of the nicest parts was that Derek has worked at CN8 and knew absolutely everyone on the set.

Not only that, but he was drafted by Sanyika — and willingly served — as official photographer and videoagrapher for a sneak peek at what went on BEHIND the scenes so that you could get a feel for what it was like.

Now, please note that while Derek shot the video with my Flip camera, he did NOT edit this video.  I KNOW that Derek would have done a MUCH better job, but I wanted to get it out to you quickly and with a full day of up at 4:45 AM at the studio by 6:30 AM, a high-level interview and then a session with a chain saw and a HUGE maple tree in my back yard, it was a busy day.  Forgive the quality, enjoy the peek behind the scenes and ABSOLUTELY don’t hold Derek responsible for the quality! He was OUTSTANDING!

Here’s the “Behind The Scenes” Video I Promised!

The interview was over like a shot.  Unfortunately, although it was in the outline the host skipped over the question that would have allowed me to plug this web site, but at least the message got out to a great many people.

So from this point on, I can say, I do both radio AND TELEVISION interviews and it will never be the FIRST time again.

With practice I’m sure that I can learn the skills to do this again and again.

Television is something that we ALL know touches millions of people and yet most of us don’t see ourselves in the interview seat.

I’d like to encourage you.

If I can do this, you can too!

After all, how much can you really say in 3 minutes and 30 seconds!

It turns out, that you can say quite a lot, if you get a little help from the experts and ACTUALLY DO what they ask you to do.

Many thanks to Sanyika Calloway Boyce, Mark Goldman and Derek Brian Stevenson and the entire Impact Action Team for making this impact possible.

YOU ARE OUTSTANDING!

Hope you enjoyed this sneak peek as much as I did.

More coming very soon!

Hey Folks,

You are amazing!

Just by coming to this page you have shown an eagerness to make a difference!

We need to measure the impact that we have on the world around us, because so often we forget the massive impact that we have — even when we do absolutely nothing!

You WILL make a difference — EVEN IF YOU DON’T WANT TO!

The choice is, “What kind of a difference will I make?”

Each day we look at our checkbook balance to see how we are doing financially.

In the same way we need to take stock of what an amazing difference we can make with SIMPLE actions.  After all, it’s the LITTLE things that make a huge difference.

When we polled the people who came to the Impact Boot Camp and asked them to name the people who had the most impact in their lives and what they did the results were unexpected.

It turns out that the things that made the biggest impact were thing like a kind word at a crucial moment.

Today, you can be that kind word.

And we need to let people KNOW the results that we are having!

Let use know EXACTLY what kind of results you are having.  Did you GIVE today?

G – Greet and meet: talk to others, smile, say hello, ask someone how

Hey Folks,

Thanks to the AMAZING efforts of the Impact Action Team’s Media Team spearheaded by our dynamic, results-oriented Impact Faculty member Sanyika Calloway Boyce I will be spreading the “Speak Up Save Lives” message to over 15 MILLION people LIVE on Comcast CN8 this Wednesday at 730 AM on the “Your Morning” Show .

http://speakupsavelives.org/images/Connie.jpg

I’ll be sharing the Impact Action Team’s message that ANYONE can make a difference and telling people how spreading the message to GIVE can save lives of teenagers at risk of suicide with Emmy Award-winning veteran news anchor Connie Colla and thenews veteran Greg Coy.

http://speakupsavelives.org/images/KenAndSanyika300.jpg

Sanyika is a constant inspiration to our entire team. Here’s an excerpt of a message that she sent out to her team just this morning:

I am so excited for what is to come this week! I have been praying regularly for God to touch, strengthen and bless each of our efforts.

I know how hard we have EACH worked to make and IMPACT in our own families, communities and businesses.

I have also seen first hand the work you’ve done for the advancement of this cause - this amazingly crazy and totally MASSIVE movement.

This calling to “Speak Up. Save Lives” - HUGE isn’t a big enough word to describe it.

I want to take a brief moment and encourage as well as challenge each of us to never see the “mundane activities” that we are required to do as unimportant in relation to others that seem to be more valuable.

I used to falsely believe that “only results matter,” that if there was no tangible evidence of my activities than I had essentially “wasted my time.”

I can assure you this is a very difficult way to run a business and a disappointing way to live  life because what I am sure we have all experienced is the feeling of “coming up short,” even after giving our best effort.

This week (and always) please remember that IMPACT can be created from taking action on the most common task as long as your motives are genuinely rooted in love. Saving lives is an overwhelmingly awesome responsibility and I know we ALL want to see the RESULT of our efforts.

YES… it is my intention to get Ken and Deremiah booked on television this week!

YES…it is your intention to have a producer, reporter or company representative call you back for an interview or approval for some sort of other tangible thing you’d like to do!

SURE… we want to have everyone in the “Twitterverse” sending our message out and talking up #IMPACT

AND….we also want to REMEMBER  the essence of what it is that we have agreed to do.

Our real and only goal should be to touch “THE ONE”

That SINGLE individual who out of the “millions we want to motivate” more than anything needs us to G-I-V-E to out attention no one else but them.

To care about, see value in, and acknowledge them - solely.

So as you go about carrying out all the various activities of your week and putting into motion the plans you have set to make MASSIVE IMPACT.

I pray that you will see the extraordinary in the ordinary and the VALUE ALL of your actions as having merit.

This week, I challenge you to:

G-I-V-E, from your purest intentions
G-I-V-E, with an attitude of gratitude
GIVE, without the expectation of ANYTHING in return

Today, view and carry out each activity you do with an attitude of service and support. This week, recognize that the very act of your “doing” is more than enough.

It would be hard to imagine that anyone could say it better.

Thanks Sanyika for being the outstanding person that you are and for all that you GIVE to MILLIONS of people who touch your life.  The Impact Action Team appreciates your leadership!

You are a blessing to us all!

All the best,

Ken McArthur

Thank you so much for becoming a part of the Speak Up Save Lives family!

What you are doing is IMPORTANT because EVEN IF YOU DO NOTHING you will personally make an impact in someone’s life today.

And the clock is clicking because someone attempts suicide every 39 seconds each and every day.

Using the principles in my best-selling book, Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions and Make a Difference in a Noisy World we are breaking through the noise and clutter with a clear message.

Our Impact Action Team is combining with thousands of people just like you and together we are doing amazing things to …

- Generate Awareness
- Facilitate Education
- Create Access to Help and Resources

I’m looking forward to doing amazing things together to make the world a better place and to help prevent suicide.
